Santa Lucia - Rome

Accommodates 2 - 1 Bed - 1 Bath -Wi-Fi - A/C - Terrace

The pluses: Exquisite furnishings, light, quiet, terrace, supremely well-equipped, in one of Rome’s most prestigious locations: Via Giulia, steps from Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, Pantheon, and Piazza Farnese. St. Peter’s, the Spanish Steps, and the Forum are all well within 20-30 minutes’ walk or a short bus or cab ride.

Neighborhood? You simply can’t beat it for elegance, prestige, character, fine dining, family-run trattorias, nightlife, antiques, fine linens, public transport, sightseeing, plus practical matters like banks, post office, coffee bars – in fact, everything you could possibly want in a Roman holiday.

What more could you want? In two words: an elevator, which our Santa Lucia flat lacks, requiring guests to ascend 68 steps to the topmost floor of this small palazzo. Not terribly difficult steps but 68 steps none the less. You either put up with it or take another flat.

Once you’ve made it up the stairs and caught your breath:

    • Entry hall leading into a good-sized living room with sofa and loveseat. This room is topped all round by a delightful frescoed frieze. Good artwork and prints abound, along with a decorative fireplace surrounded by charming painted tiles, everything characterized by an equestrian theme
    • Separate dining room with its own decorative fireplace surrounded by pretty majolica tiles
    • Small but fully equipped kitchen
    • Bedroom with indivisible matrimonial bed of excellent quality
    • En-suite bathroom with shower over tub

Via a somewhat awkward antique spiral wrought-iron staircase:

    • Rooftop terrace, enjoying a wonderful view encompassing everything from the cupola of the nearby church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone, to the dome of St. Peter’s in the distance and the Gianicolo beyond

Santa Lucia is a perfect flat for a couple. We’ve even placed two sisters or mother-and-daughter combinations, where guests didn’t mind sharing the queen-size bed. The location is superb.

The single negative is the stairs, both up to the flat and from the within the flat up to the terrace. The latter makes it somewhat awkward to eat up on the terrace, as you’ve got to balance trays of food, plates, and utensils. But we’ve got to tell you: Except for those traveling in winter, EVERYONE who has rented the Santa Lucia flat has overcome that slight awkwardness.
