Vistamare – Amalfi Coast – Positano

Accommodates 6 - 3 Bedrooms - 2 Baths - A/C - Wi-Fi - Terraces

Vistamare has among the most spectacular sea views Positano has to offer. It forms part of the same pink stucco villa which houses La Veranda del Mare and Il Nido, sited immediately adjacent to Il Nido and on a level above La Veranda. Thus, if you’re a larger group, those three units can, taken together, accommodate up to 13 persons comfortably in 6 double bedrooms, 1 single, and 6 baths.

Vistamare has its own independent entrance, accessed from the Via Pasitea below, via a stairway with 85 steps. You can also approach from above, i.e., from the main Amalfi Drive. This is down a similar number of steps. So you MUST be fit. There is no way around it. We have sent people up into their 80s to Vistamare. They took the steps VERY slowly! On the other hand, both because of the steps and precipitous drops, as well as of the antique furnishings, children under 12 years of age are strongly discouraged.

We ourselves stayed at Vistamare, before it had ever been rented. The owner has done it up beautifully. Ceilings are high and are barrel-vaulted; floors are ceramic. Family antiques are pleasingly mixed with modern pieces and 21st-century amenities. Rooms are oversize. In fact, even though Vistamare must technically be described as an “apartment”, one truly feels that one is in a fully free-standing independent house.

The terraces are just magnificent, with spectacular views over Positano and the sea. Believe it or not, this property, right in the center of Positano village, has a significant vegetable garden whose product, in season, is available for your consumption, at no cost!

15 minutes walking down to the centre and 10 more minutes to the main beach, the ”Spiaggia Grande”. The nearest, smaller beach is Fornillo, at 500 m. approx. The two beaches are about 400m apart and are connected by foot. A stop for the local bus is right on the road below the villa.
A short bus ride will take you to the top of the village (every 15 min) from where one can get the blue SITA buses to Sorrento (1 h.) or Amalfi (1 h.).
To the right of the main beach numerous ferries and hydrofoils ply daily between Positano and Capri (50min), Naples (50 min), Amalfi (30 min) and Salerno (1-1/2 h).

Apart from the stairs, which are an issue in virtually all Positano properties, there is one and only one defect at Vistamare: The lack of a third bathroom. Two couples who want real space would be in heaven here. Even three couples willing to share two bathrooms would work beautifully, as the bedrooms are all spacious and virtually equal in size and in quality. Otherwise, the place is virtually perfect.

Again, we cannot repeat it often enough: Positano is full of stairs, most of them irregular and with high risers, including the 85 steps you need to negotiate to get up to the Piccola Limonaia. We strongly discourage families with very small children and anyone with even relatively slight mobilitity issues. We strongly advise guests to avail themselves of a porter service which we can arrange for you in advance.

There is some minor noise from the street, which is essentially Positano’s only street with car traffic. Remember, however, that bedrooms are all air-conditioned, meaning you can close them off, turn on the climate control, and neither suffocate nor suffer traffic noise in summer. There’s inevitably going to some noise seepage, but not significant.

You can (and probably should) come here WITHOUT a car. Have our driver pick you up at the Naples airport, or at the Naples or Sorrento train stations. Then use the money you save by not renting a car (and NOT paying nearly 2 euros per liter for gasoline and NOT paying for the vastly expensive parking garage just down the street) on having that same driver transport you stress-free to various daytrip destinations: Pompeii, Ravello, Paestum, etc. Over the years, we would guess that it’s been about 50/50 between guests who have chosen to have a car versus those who have opted for a driver.
